2005-10-26 - Chip Online: "Getting Close to the Ideal Living Room PC"

2005-10-26 - Chip Online: A PC for the living room should be slim, offer lots of connection options, and while being powerful under the hood also remain whisper quiet according to the editors of the German hardware website Chip Online. They took a look at the Shuttle XPC System M1000, the first Small Form Factor (SFF) in Hi-Fi format from Shuttle. Following comprehensive tests, the editors could only come to one conclusion: "The Shuttle XPC System M1000 has no real concurrence at this point."

"The Hi-Fi rack friendly format of the M1000" doesn't betray its PC origins" write the editors. There are DVD recorders with front panel display, card reader and front USB ports available, but no one can keep up with Shuttle. The lower front right panel reveals a bay for a removable 2.5" hard drive, for which Shuttle includes an aluminum case. Let the editors explain how easy using it is: "All you need to do is install a notebook hard drive in order to acquire additional storage space to store photo or video archives."

"Good equipment, lots of connection options" praised the editors, noting the presence of digital sound input and output, analog YUV output, and plentiful Cinch ports for a surround sound system. Needless to say, one would also expect top performance from such a system: "The up-to-date hardware configuration delivers good operation: the M1000 delivered better scores in our benchmarks than any other media center PC tested." Strong enough to play games, the Shuttle XPC System also impressed by its quietness: "The system never went above 1,2 Sone, making sure it never bothers even the most sensitive users."

Conclusion:

"With the M1000 Shuttle delivers a well thought out living room PC, which comes close to the ideal quiet, powerful and stylish PC that can do it all."

Pros:

  • Able to play 3D games
  • Quiet
