Computer Shopper: "An excellent choice"

This is the conclusion the editors of the British computer magazine Computer Shopper drew from the Shuttle XPC Barebone SD39P2 - the first small form factor PC to support quad-core processors. Especially convincing was the "very good" performance and its low noise level which let this high-end gaming rig run "mercifully quiet."

"Shuttle's XPC SD39P2 shows that mini PCs don't have to be underpowered compared with their full-size desktop equivalents," the editors put an end to the rumour. Being built around the Intel 975X chipset, the SD39P2 takes "any Intel Core 2 Duo processor," while the memory banks manage up to 8GB of RAM.

Conclusion: "If you want to build a small but powerful PC, the SD39P2 is an excellent choice. It will support all Intel's processors, it can accommodate three hard disks, and it provides a graphics card and all the performance you'd hope for."

Inside the case there's room for up to three hard disks and an optical drive. "Thoughtfully" pre-routed SATA power and data cables help to keep the assembly as simple as possible. One PCI and one PCI-E connector are available for expansion cards: "You can fit double-slot cards," the editors add. Five fans sit inside keeping the components cool. Worried at first, the editors quickly changed their minds when they noticed "the SD39P2 is mercifully quiet." That said, the editors "could barely hear the PC when it was on and, even better, it didn't get much louder when running processor-intensive tasks such as games," praising the low noise level.

Though running without roaring, "performance was very good under Windows Vista." When it comes to gaming performance was convincing either, when the editors pointed out: "Games performance was also as good as expected." Moreover the Shuttle XPC Barebone SD39P2 provides a vast array of connectors. Six USB 2.0 ports on the rear are available joined by Gigabit Ethernet, external S-ATA and 8 channel sound.
