"Small, stylish and quiet," is how the editors of the German hardware website Netzwelt.de sum up the advantages of the Shuttle XPC Barebone SB86i. As the only BTX SFF PC in the world it impressed the editors right by its design: "Nearly unobstrusive with sleek, white front finish, probably the most exceptional SFF PC from Shuttle arrived here in our labs."
"Pushing it to the maximum," are the plans the editors of the German website Netzwelt.de have with the Shuttle XPC Barebone SB86i. "Stability and heat dissipation" are in focus. In order to test the stability the editors ran a 3D-benchmark with an 7800GTX graphics card from Gigabyte for hours, as with 110 Watt it gets quite hot. But this won’t be a problem for the BTX SFF PC from Shuttle: "It ran stable, without getting neither really noisy nor hot. Additionally, we had no crashes to report."
High performance means high noise level? Not with Shuttle XPC Barebone SB86i: "A smooth and deep rush describes the noise it produces best. We haven’t seen a quieter Shuttle XPC Barebone for Intel Pentium 4 yet." And even the temperatures remained calmly low.
But how about the price then? "With an average price of 350 € [for Germany] the Shuttle XPC Barebone SB86i isn’t more expensive than a conventional PC including mainboard and power supply. Adding an extra graphics card is not urgently required, as the performing Intel chipset is already onboard."
Conclusion:
"Shuttle demonstrates with the XPC Barebone SB86i that even a Intel Pentium 4 that is normally quiet power consuming, can be cooled down while managing even a low noise development right in a small case of a SFF PC. Price and performance meet each other making the world’s first BTX barebone an absolute recommendation for everyone who wants to quit living next to a conventional big PC and already have had bad experiences with noisy cube-shaped PCs."
