2005-05-24 - c't: "The XPC Free remote control is convenient to use"

2005-05-24 - c't:

The Shuttle XPC Accessory PN31 is a wireless remote control with a built-in transmitter and a USB module that works as receiver, providing an easy and convenient way of controling your Shuttle XPC. But does it work with Windows XP Media Center Edition? The German computer magazine c't wanted to answer this question: "Anyone who wants simple operation should consider the XPC Free."

Media Center PCs are mostly used in the living room. For easy control of the Shuttle XPC, one will need a remote control to browse the menus. There's no doubt: without the opportunity to access the PC from the sofa it won't be
competitive with other consumer-devices," write the editors of the German computer magazine c't. This is why they had a closer look at several remote controls, including of course, the Shuttle XPC Accessory PN31. This is a wireless remote control solution with transmitter and USB receiver for flexible accessing the Shuttle XPC.

Installation proved easy: "The USB receiver is immediately detected by Windows ... so that no drivers are needed to install the device." The range of functions reaches from volume control, accessing the Windows Media Player to managing the Windows XP Media Center Edition and even more: "Programs like Winamp can be operated with the mouse function of the PN31. The mouse control pad for the mouse cursor reacts quickly and smoothly [.]" But there's more the PN31 has to offer: "For a little extra tool to control more programs check out:  http://www.girder.nl/. The shareware detects the remote control kit without any problems." Thanks to the 38 keys you can manage many different tasks via infrared easily." The Shuttle PN31 scored well in terms of ergonomics as well too: "The XPC Free remote control is convenient to use, and the black, mat plastic feels high-quality."

Conclusion:

"Anyone who wants simple operation should consider the XPC Free. You'll definitely find your way around the Media Center software[.]"
