Five burner and six different DVD blanks were tested by the editors of C’t, a German IT magazine. The new kid on the block? The Shuttle CR40, our first dual layer DVD-writer, offered in the same attractive XPC design that has made our computers famous. Yet it wasn’t only the burner’s looks that dazzled: "Unlike the other drives, the Shuttle model uses the blanks’ ADIP information which indicates speed, laser force and pulse duration. That is why the Shuttle CR40 is able to burn no-name blanks at full speed." Other manufacturers have to use the default values and drop the speed to 8x or even 4x. What about the speed control? It dazzled as well: "The integrated WOCP (Walking Optimal Power Control) technology enables the writer to monitor the writing speed at all times and adjust it on-the-fly when necessary. This explains the improved results at high speed." The editors also suggested the perfect blank: "It would be ideal to work at 12x and use a 16x DVD+R from Mitsubishi (Verbatim,) or a 8x-DVD-R from Taijo Yuden (available under the brand names Plextor, Fuji, JVC and in slim-line packages by Verbatim marked "Made in Japan.)"
Conclusion:
"The highest speed models bear the name Philips and Shuttle."
